What We’ve Done

We’ve Missed You!

by Steven on November 20, 2011

After a string of projects, we took a moment – several moments – to catch our breath and reflect on the past four years of service and look ahead to what is next.  While it did not allow for our Annual Fall Clean-Up this year, know that we are back at the drawing table planning for the holidays.   Look for announcements soon.

Let’s catch up in the meantime… read on.

IMN School

When we think of the progress the IMN School in Haiti has made, our smiles – well, there’s not enough space when we stand side by side – our smiles are that wide.  Together we have made life after a devastating earthquake, just a little brighter.  The  principal, Maxandre Bien Aime, has worked hard to allocate donations in an effort to return this school to a thriving educational facility with happy children eager to learn – and an aside here, ten eager sixth graders passed the notoriously challenging national tests – that’s 10 out of 10 – and according to Maxandre, an unheard of feat in Haiti.

Last year, GH’s donations paid for staff salaries and installed a well and water storage and re-established running water for the school and surrounding community.  This year’s donations funded the purchase of 6 sturdy iron windows, 1 iron gate and 14 iron panels (cut, welded, rust-proofed and installed) that now grace the newly built walls of a structure that, aside from the greater security provided, elicits great pride in the community.  To date, 180 students are learning, the community is better functioning and the school’s staff is beaming.  There is plenty more to do – one step at a time.

JAMMIN’ 4 VETS

it was an honor and a sight to behold as GH (along with the Legion Riders Post 80) presented a $9000 check to Robert Adams, president of the Midwest Homeless Shelter for Veterans in Wheaton, IL and we were equally honored and thrilled to present another check for $9000 to the Hines Physically Challenged Sports Program for Veterans.  Of course, that was after a gala event that filled one summer night in July with music and laughter and the lively chatter of new and old friends alike, during a most scrumptious meal of roast pig and all the trimmings – all of it to honor and support our veterans and the quality of their lives.  What a wonderful way to say “Thank you” to those who serve our country.

Fire Safety Project

It all began with a group of high school students at UIC College Prep- Noble Street Charter School and a project concerning fire safety…  GH learned of this and purchased 50 smoke detectors for distribution to students’ families. There’s more… on a Saturday in early September, a group of GH volunteers travelled to the inner city to personally install smoke detectors in 5 separate homes.  There’s even more… in recognition of this service, GH was the proud recipient of the “Corporate Award” presented by the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association.  It all began with a group of high school students.  We say to them,”Bravo for putting your goodwill into motion”!  …And the goodwill just keeps rolling.

Global Hope Community Garden

What a season of giving this beautiful garden provided.  From May through mid-October our little garden supplied us with 78 bags of produce that were delivered each Monday and Friday to the Downers Grove Township Food Pantry.  We have a slew of wonderful volunteers to thank.

First, we extend a special thanks to Liz Rossignuolo for wearing the hat of “volunteer coordinator”.  Liz kept a consistent and reliable rhythm of volunteers tending to our garden in 2 week sessions throughout the entire growing season – no easy task.  Theresa Suchy-McGraw and Maura Clark both played large parts in the melody of our garden this year by being there “till the very end”.  Thank you so much for your commitment to helping GH to help others.

.

We are so happy to have so many to thank!

Teresa, Rita, Maura, Steve, Pat, Vivian, Leslie, Cheryl, Sarah, Ken & Marjie, Beth & Sheila, Teri, Janet, Marina, Gayle, Teri, Cheryl, Liz, Michelle and kids, Lisa, Theresa and Aileen, Mary, Linda, and the fabulous Green Team from Whole Foods (Willowbrook).

From deep within the heart and soul of Global Hope we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and we send you a resounding “THANK YOU”.

Jammin’ 4 Vets Fundraiser

by Steven on June 16, 2011

We are grateful for the many freedoms that this great nation enjoys.
We are proud of the men and women who upheld those freedoms
and who were willing to risk their own lives in order to protect ours.
We are deeply saddened by the many who did not return home.
In honor of the many who did return home and the incomprehensible
physical and emotional challenges they face daily,

Global Hope, together with the American Legion Riders Post 80,
are hosting
a fundraiser to benefit two essential local organizations
that assist, specifically, veterans facing critical challenges.

The Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans (MSHV) in Wheaton, IL
With the mission “Serving Those Who Served the Nation”, this program helps veterans transition from homelessness to independent living within a two-year time frame (the average stay is 6 months). The program is run 24/7 by a dedicated staff of professionals who provide a wide range of intensive one-on-one support services. Most impressive is their 70% success rate (well above national averages).

The Hines Physically Challenged Sports Committee
With the goal of “motivating veterans to overcome physical challenges and boost morale”, this program recruits and trains all ages and disabilities in therapeutic recreational activities. Many go on to attend one of the Veteran’s Affairs National Competitions/Clinics.

Our goal is to raise $20,000!!

An anonymous donor has offered to MATCH

all donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000

Please send your donations today!  Any amount is sincerely appreciated. A list of donors will be posted at the event.

2011 Haiti Update

by Nancy & Nora on February 15, 2011

Kids4Good’s Special Guest

It’s been a year since a devastating earthquake hit Haiti and challenged the lives of so many.  IMN Community School in Haiti has been a focus of Kids4Good, a student/parent organization in Darien.

Much has been accomplished to get this school back on its feet.  The principal, Maxandre Bien-Amie, marked this one year anniversary with a visit to Lace School in Darien to thank Global Hope, Kids4Good and Schools Count, along with many other supporters. Maxandre spoke of the long list of improvements made over this past year.  This dedicated principal, with the help of many, got the school up and running in record time (the first in the area to open its doors to returning students).

Despite many accomplishments, there is more to do. This community still faces extreme homelessness and joblessness. IMN is in need of funding for teacher’s salaries, student’s tuition, books for six grade levels and structural items such as wrought iron windows and classroom doors.

Thank you for making Holiday Wishes come true for so many…

“And filling our wish list was no easy task this year – but fill it you did… and so much more!!”

Humanitarian Service Project’s (HSP) Feed a Family Project

Prana Yoga’s Fundraiser (in Geneva, IL) collected nearly $1000 – and combined with Global Hope and Yoga Among Friends supporters’ generous donations, HSP was presented a “bountiful” check for $3,338.  Fifty-five families were each provided with 3 weeks of fresh meat, produce and groceries!

Humanitarian Service Project’s Holiday Gift Program

Our friends at Yoga Among Friends and Prana Yoga collected 4 huge boxes filled to the brim with toys and gift cards.  GH donated $1,000 toward the purchase of additional toys and gift cards.

and you didn’t stop there…

Respond Now Holiday Coat and Gift Drive

Global Hope and the employees of Perma-Seal teamed up on this one and come delivery day, a Perma-Seal box truck transported it’s enormous load of toys, coats, etc. to Respond Now in Chicago Heights.  GH topped off the delivery with $1,000 of underwear, generously discounted by the Walmart store in Darien.

and you helped us still more…

Global Hope’s Holiday Volunteer Event

Throughout 2 busy days, 31 GH volunteers worked to set-up the Respond Now Holiday Store and they helped kids and parents of families in need pick out clothing and toys.  This was an outstanding effort led by Respond Now’s Liz “Wiz”.  We joined iIndividuals, couples, and families from the surrounding area who came to help – some, in gratitude, because they wanted to give back and many, “just because they heard that the “store” needed their help”.

Love, Compassion, Gratitude and just plain Goodness filled this huge room.
Families were helped,
Children were gifted.
Hearts were alive with both giving and receiving.

From the Rooftops We Thank You!!

This holiday season was rich with the aroma of both “giving and receiving”.  The money donations, the toys, the coats, hats and scarves, etc. were piled high by the end of our collection period.  By project’s end, we put food on the table for many families.  We made gift giving possible for families – lots of families.  We made sure that children had warm coats and hats and gloves and books to read and toys to play with.  Holidays were brighter for many we think – and smiles were wider for us, we are sure.  That brings us to you, our beloved volunteers.  Without you, these wonderful accomplishments would not be a reality.

We thank these volunteers for taking time in the midst of this busy season to help with our various Holiday Projects.

Marge S./Perma-Seal organized all the donations that were dropped off.
Lori P./Perma-Seal coordinated the project from beginning to the delivery of donations to Respond Now.
Many Global Hope and Perma-Seal volunteers loaded and unloaded a Perma-Seal box truck filled with donations of toys, coats, gloves, hats, scarves and underwear.
Marjie K. shopped and shopped some more for underwear – $1,000 worth of underwear!
Ray Apton, Walmart Manager in Darien, gave GH a great deal on all of that underwear.

31 volunteers worked the Holiday Store in Chicago Heights on Dec 21 and Dec 22.
Anna A., Nancy G., Marsha G., Beth K. &  Ryan and Steve R., Mary & Kristin L., Nora & Steven M., Chuck & Carl M., Laura, Amy, Luke & Patrick M., Gayle M., Dickie & Teri N., Marge, John, Jenny & Stacy P., Lori & Josh P., Cameron & Chase R., Laura Ann & Roy S., Stacey & Alex S.

As we scan over this past year, we want to make sure you are
aware of the difference you have made in the world.

* You decorated bedsheets and donated money for the survivors of the devastating earthquake in Haiti and your generosity supplied a Haiti school with access to a much needed water supply.

* Your help in our community garden this spring, summer and fall ensured that many family meals contained fresh grown produce.

* Many Chicago public schools provided students with essential school supplies that would not have been possible without you  volunteers who took time out of your busy schedules to help in the delivery process.

* A high school in New Orleans has been transformed into a more functional learning environment for students thanks to your volunteering efforts and donations.

* Many local seniors were spared the hardship of yard clean-up this fall, as you volunteer “rakers” spent several hours one Saturday in November gathering leaves and stuffing bags to the brim and leaving them curbside for pick-up.

We are all neighbors really – the fortunate and the less fortunate -  watching out for each other, ready to lend a hand – ready with an open heart.  We are fortunate to have the support of so many generous volunteers.  Our successful projects are a reflection of your kind and generous hearts and endless flow of goodwill.  We sincerely thank you for your support with our Holiday Drive and every single endeavor we have set out to accomplish over this past year.

May the New Year bring an abundance of all good things
to you and your loved ones.

Caring, Sharing and Shining Brightly…

That’s what this year’s

Holiday Food, Clothing & Toy Drive is all about!

In the midst of an unstable economy, families from every walk of life face financial challenges.  As joyous as the holidays can be for some, they can be a time of increased stress and hardship for others.  In order to reach out to as many families as possible this year, our 2010 Holiday Food & Toy Drive will assist two very active charitable organizations with their own Holiday Drives.

We invite you to join us!

Meet two organizations ready to help fulfill the

Holiday Wish List for many local families.

Humanitarian Service Project (HSP)

The Humanitarian Service Project (HSP) started in Karole & Floyd Kettering’s spare room  in 1979 with the purpose of helping needy families during the Christmas season in the DuPage County area by providing them with an abundance of groceries and gifts.  The Christmas Offering still continues today, providing 150 impoverished families with 3 weeks of groceries, frozen meats, fresh produce and gifts for all the children. In 2009, 23 tons of food and 12 tons of Christmas gifts were distributed.

Respond Now

Respond Now has been operating since 1969 answering the emergency needs of residents of the Chicago South Suburban Area.  Every Holiday season, they organize a drive that results in opening the doors of the First Christian Church in Chicago Heights to allow a parent to “shop” for clothing and one toy per qualifying family. Respond Now offers relief and a helping hand to the poor among us.  “We believe in helping our neighbors because we have no doubt that CARING is the key to true community!”

There are THREE ways to Help!

1.  “Feed a Family”

$60 provides for 3 wks of Fresh Groceries

Global Hope Senior Fall Cleanup

by Nancy & Nora on November 30, 2010

“Rakes in Motion” and so much more…

7 Yards,
endless leaves,
22 volunteers,
and some very happy Lombard Seniors.

That is probably the best way to describe our busy Senior Fall Clean-up last Saturday morning.  Dedicated volunteers bundled up to gather at the Perma-Seal Basement Systems parking lot in Downers Grove. Yes, there was a chill in the air – but the combination of a brilliant sunny sky and the giddy Saturday morning chatter put some serious “rakes in motion” – and 181 leaf-packed bags stood curbside as a result.

5 hours of raking can most certainly work up an appetite.  Delicious subs from Berto’s in DG were waiting as our hungry volunteers returned to Perma-Seal to warm-up and refuel.

The morning was so much more than a raking project.  Many volunteers took the time to get to know these yard owners – learning of soon-to-arrive family members, recent surgeries and accolades laced with both appreciation and encouragement – many passing around thoughtfully prepared snack platters and beverages.

Quite a morning.  Quite a volunteer crew. Quite a worthwhile and rewarding project for all involved.

A resounding THANK YOU to the following volunteers:

Anna A., Margaret F., Nancy G., Sarah J., Ken K., Jack & Mary L., Pat & Nora M., Chuck & Ross M., Kelly M., Pat, Laura Jane & Colby M. and Abby K., Dickie N., Karla O., Sarah O., Joyce O., Aileen & Theresa S-M.

Back from NOLA and Ready for the Fall Yard Clean-Up

by Nancy & Nora on November 10, 2010

What a Trip!
What a School, and
What an Incredible Group of Volunteers!

IHSNO in the L.E. Rabouin school building is a first-year charter high school serving 9th and 10th grades – with hopes to expand to 11th & 12th in 2011.  The curriculum offers an alternative teaching style when traditional methods are not enough.  Since empowering our youth is of particular interest, we had an immediate connection to the halls, walls, students and staff.  This proved to be a wonderful opportunity to fortify the chances of kids that many had already given up on.

We had four days and here’s what we accomplished:

  • Custom-built an 18-ft office reception counter
  • Painted and restored two 3rd floor hallways
  • Painted and restored a 3rd floor music room
  • Filled, patched and painted locker banks on several floors
  • Cleaned and restored marble base moldings and custom door hardware
  • Donated new basketball goals for the outdoor basketball courts
  • Donated a case of basketballs and nets thanks to Chris Duhon of the Orlando Magic and Mike & Gayle Mullins
  • Assisted in two elementary school carnivals with games and face painting
  • Delivered paintings supplied by iArtists to Camp Restore.  These paintings are donated to families who are rebuilding their homes and their lives in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina

A challenge?  Yes.  A challenge happily met by 23 Global Hope volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and got right to it.  The magic of this hardworking group though, was that work looked like play and music consistently kept rhythm to all of the unique working sounds throughout the building.  Singing, dancing, laughing, and friendly chatter graced the halls and rooms of the school each day.

Our thanks, once again to Keith Kelly of Innovative Communications for creating this video!

At work day’s end, the music and the lively chatter did not stop.  Our happy work team simply loved being together.  We walked to restaurants, listened to the local music – ate the local cuisine.  We tasted New Orleans in every way possible.

The volunteers commitment to excellence was unmistakable.   Under the cheerful leadership of Teri and Kenny, painters, Mary H, Margaret, Marnie, Marjie, Alyson, Doris, Larry H, Patti, Connie, Anna, Sue, Mary D, John D, meticulously covered every surface.  Jimmy and Ron went the extra mile and scraped layers of paint spills off the marble baseboards that lined the hallways.  Aside from painting, Corinne with her indelible smile made sure we had music to work/dance to.  We lost count of how many times Ron traveled back and forth to the airport transporting volunteers – one by one.  Our master carpenters, John E, Jon and Larry S, focused on the reception counter until the last board was applied.  Teddy did a masterful job finishing the “locker walls”.  Michael with his full range of talents was involved in every job.  In addition to painting, Nancy provided overall art direction.  Dickie and Mary oversaw every aspect of the project and so much more.  This team went above and beyond and there was an ecstatic principal and staff at IHSNO to prove it.

Sweat, fatigue, sore muscles, new friends, appreciation and a shared commitment to students who face obstacles in so many different and challenging ways became a rich gumbo of love and compassion and incredible stamina.

The school is proud of its new face.
We are proud of our volunteers.
We are Global Hope – putting “goodwill in motion” loud and strong in New Orleans – once again.
