The Community Garden is Ready and Waiting . . .

by Nancy & Nora on May 23, 2011

On Saturday morning, May 21, twenty volunteers generously gave up their Saturday morning to help us prepare the Global Hope Community Garden for planting.  This year we have nearly 2,000 square feet of planting space!   4 truckloads of mulch and aged manure were generously donated by the Morton Arboretum and New Traditions Riding Stables.

Shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and rototillers were a whirl of activity distributing the soil amendments, rototilling and raking.  Within a few hours the garden space was transformed with mounded planting rows, a work area and a path.

Our thanks to all of these hard-working folks:

Anna
Mark, Ben & Joey from Mark’s Landscaping in Downers Grove

Successful Haiti Workshop

by Nancy & Nora on April 24, 2011

Our Sincere Thanks!

What a magical morning we shared as we transformed the DG Public Works lunchroom into a workshop of love and service for the people of Haiti!

We THANK YOU all from the bottom of our hearts for taking time from your precious weekend to give so freely.   From setup to cleanup, you all pitched in and made it happen . . . 128 burial palls, new sundresses, emerging sewing circles and the sweetness that comes from working side-by-side to help those who need us.

With humble gratitude, the Global Hope team.

HELPING HAITI – Sundress & Burial Cloth Workshop

by Nancy & Nora on April 6, 2011

Sundress & Burial Cloth Workshop

Saturday, April 23
8:30am – 12 noon

Public Works Building
5101 Walnut, Downers Grove

It’s been over a year since the earthquake ravaged Haiti.  The aftershock of devastation continues and the need for burial cloths is greater than ever with 80-100 burials a day at St. Damien Children’s Hospital in Tabarre, Haiti.  Orphanages are filled to capacity – and providing enough clothing is yet another concern.

We made a profound difference last year with our sheet drive thanks to our amazing volunteers.  Let’s do it again!  Adults, Kids… All are welcome.  From Seasoned Sewers to those simply eager to help – we will put all hands and hearts to good use.

The need for burial cloths and dresses is ongoing, so we’ve created many ways to help all under one roof.  There are several projects to choose from and volunteers can choose what suits them best.  We’ve listed a few ideas below:

Burial Cloth Project:

              • Prior to the event, help us collect clean, flat sheets  Bring them folded and ready to decorate.  (new or used, solid or patterned – no dark colors please)
              • Come to the event and decorate (with or without sheets)
              • Organize your own sheet decorating project with a kids group, church, family or friends.   (we can tell you how)

Sundress Sewing Circle:

(Special thanks to Meredith Harbour for bringing this need to light)

  • Come to the event, with your sewing machine and make a dress or two
  • Organize your own sundress sewing circle (we can tell you how)
  • Sew dresses on your own at home (we can tell you how)
  • Meredith’s Sundress: With one yard of fabric, a simple pattern and some sewing know-how, you can make a dress!

Tanner School Gets a Paint Job!

by mary on February 25, 2011

Without a doubt the place to be last weekend was the Henry O. Tanner Elementary School in Chicago.  This 3-story southside school was abuzz on both Saturday and Sunday as 80 plus volunteers took to the hallways and performed nothing short of magic.  Principal Smith and Assistant Principal King shared their vision with volunteers from Global Hope, Schools Count and Perma-Seal Basement Systems. They described bright happy colors adorning the walls of their beloved school.  They saw happy children who showed great pride in this school building that would provide quality education from pre-K all the way through 8th grade.  They saw parents of students attending health, fitness and literacy classes on Saturdays.  They envisioned their school as a hub to this thriving south-side community.

These beautiful words set the pace for the job ahead and volunteers scattered every which way, grabbing paint brushes, tape rolls, buckets and sponges and got to work.  Our mission was to make a principal and vice-principal’s dream come true.

The halls of each of the three floors transitioned from a faded hue to a lively, happy yellow as brushes and rollers traveled up and down, back and forth working from one end to the other.  Once-dingy doors in the reception area of this school gradually gleamed with clean, bright shades of blue and orange.  Attention to every detail was the undercurrent of each task.  Tile walls and floors were wiped clean.  Door trim was given a fresh coat of paint.  Mr. Smith and Mr. King would now work in freshly painted offices.  The new orange color in the reception room is sure to bring a smile to the face of all who enter.

There was so much more than painting and cleaning going on inside this school.   Volunteers gave of themselves tirelessly and eagerly.  Smiles, laughter, singing, dancing and chatting kept beat while some serious work was accomplished.  A touching group of volunteers walked in adorned in orange t-shirts and shared that they were volunteering in memory of their friend, Vihang Patel – a friend who was dedicated to the service of others.  They became known as “Team Orange”.  This beautiful group of colleagues worked passionately to carry on the legacy of their dear friend.  Moving, indeed and an inspiration on top of the many inspiring deeds witnessed over this beautiful weekend.

Hearts galore graced hallways and offices while a principal and assistant principal watched their vision manifest before their eyes.  It was an honor to participate in their vision and it was a thrill to witness the transformation by 3:00 Sunday afternoon.  Mr. King sent over a few enthusiastic reactions from teachers and students as they entered their school this morning.  “Wow, it really makes the school look more inviting!”  “I love the doors.”  I love the orange in the office.”  “The kids will love the new and improved Tanner.”

A school’s dream realized – and a mission accomplished as 80 plus volunteers reflect on a job “impeccably” done.  Nothing short of “goodwill in motion”!!.

Our Thank You’s ring out loudly to each and every one of you who had a hand in any way at all in bringing about an amazing transformation to a school with a beautiful vision.

Tony DeStefano of Sherwin Williams, your generous donations kept our volunteers busy and provided a school with a fresh new look that will impact the staff and student body beyond measure.

Don Schuetz of ColorPro Painting, your many tools and painting supplies were appreciated and put to good use.

Mark Cronin, thank you so much for your added supplies as the need arose.

It was an honor to work beside this amazing group of volunteers, that included:

  • 8 tireless volunteers from the Lincolnway East High School Key Club
  • 18 beautiful “Orange Team” who volunteered in memory of a friend
  • Many wonderful Tanner teachers, administrators and students, and
  • Anna A, Norm B., Paul B., Kelly C., Mark C., John D., Dick F., John G., Nancy G., John H., Gina J., Caroline K., Ken K., Marjie K, Tony L., Vincente L., Jack L., Mary L., Aileen M., Chuck M., Terry M., Kelly M., Colby M., Laura Jane M., Dickie N., Teri .N, Dawn O., Karla O., Sanskruti P., Todd P., Lori P., Cameron R., Chase R., Stacey S., Dan S., Lisa S., Laura Ann S., Roy S., Theresa S. from Perma-Seal, Schools Count and Global Hope.

We are grateful for our friends at Tanner and for the heartfelt service made possible by our rich community of volunteers, donors and partners.

2011 Haiti Update

by Nancy & Nora on February 15, 2011

Kids4Good’s Special Guest

It’s been a year since a devastating earthquake hit Haiti and challenged the lives of so many.  IMN Community School in Haiti has been a focus of Kids4Good, a student/parent organization in Darien.

Much has been accomplished to get this school back on its feet.  The principal, Maxandre Bien-Amie, marked this one year anniversary with a visit to Lace School in Darien to thank Global Hope, Kids4Good and Schools Count, along with many other supporters. Maxandre spoke of the long list of improvements made over this past year.  This dedicated principal, with the help of many, got the school up and running in record time (the first in the area to open its doors to returning students).

Despite many accomplishments, there is more to do. This community still faces extreme homelessness and joblessness. IMN is in need of funding for teacher’s salaries, student’s tuition, books for six grade levels and structural items such as wrought iron windows and classroom doors.

Supporting DG High Schools

by Nancy & Nora on February 15, 2011

GH Supports DG South High School

Global Hope learned of the enriching and empowering after-school programs threatened by funding cuts at Downers Grove South High School and wanted to help.  We consider the continuation of these programs vital to our students growth and well-being.  With that in mind, GH presented DG South with a $5000 donation – made possible by Perma-Seal Charitable Foundation whose special interest is education and our youth.  The donation will support the following:

STRIVE (Success Through Reaching Individual Expectations) Program

This is a structured after-school environment where students can complete homework, study for tests and learn invaluable study skills.  The program’s potential is higher GPA’s and a better study discipline.  Originally only available to freshman, the need is to expand the program to include financially disadvantaged upperclassmen as well (which totals 15% of student population).  Click Here for more info.

Snowball Prevention Program

A 2-day retreat, meeting twice a year that encourages responsible and positive thinking.  It is attended by approximately 500 students a year.  This donation will allow those who are in need of financial support to attend.  Click Here for more info.

Counseling and Student Support Services Department

Yoga mats and blocks will be purchased to allow students to attend “Zen Zone’ (a yoga class designed to reduce stress and improve overall well-being).  This program has been involved in a 2-year study with favorable results in reducing stress and increasing performance.

Birthday Parties “A-Plenty”

by Nancy & Nora on February 15, 2011

Joyce Owens turned 70 in January and threw herself a party!  More accurately, she threw a party for a ton of children.

In the spirit of supporting Humanitarian Service Project’s (HSP) Birthday Party program, Joyce asked each guest to bring a gift for a child.  By party’s end, the huge box by the front door was overflowing with toys, puzzles, dolls and games.

These gifts will be allocated to a large number of “birthday boxes”.  Each “birthday in a box” is filled with all the trimmings for a birthday celebration (including the gift) and distributed to children whose parents don’t have the means to acknowledge their child’s birthday with a party.

Birthday Blessings to ALL!!
